Whatever you think of him, there can be no doubt that Gavin Newsom has brought a green consciousness to the governance of the city of San Francisco. This video from YouTube is an overview of what he's been up to.
San Francisco as the #1 city in the country when it comes to waste management according to Sustainlane. We apparently diverted 69% of our total waste from city landfills through recycling, green waste and composting programs.
Doc Smith has a good writeup of the announcement of a new biodiesel plant at Pier 92. The plant operator, Darling International of Irving Texas, has a checkered history in San Francisco, but now seems to have cleaned up its image enough to get the SF Department of Environment stamp of approval.
San Francisco's first all green cab company leads the way. Hybrids may help the SF cab industry survive the crush of high gas prices. Not much room for luggage, though.
Where do I recycle this? How many times a month do you ask yourself that question? (We hope it's often!) The SF Department of the Environment web site has a handy form to help you find a place to reuse, recycle, (or if absolutely necessary, dispose of) everything including appliances, medicine, motor oil, batteries, and much more. Check it out.
How does a neighborhood with limited resources turn a blighted strip of land into a huge community garden? The neighbors of Quesada Street transformed a litter infested median strip into beautiful garden with consistent hard work, borrowed tools, and a passion for gardening. This video tells the story of their diligent struggle to create the Quesada Gardens.
It's quiet, it's pretty, and it's low to the ground. What's not to love about the new diesel hybrid bus. On June 1 we received the first of 56 Diesel Hybrid buses we've ordered from Daimler Chrysler. At $488,000 each, these buses are not cheap, in fact they are about 40% more expensive than traditional diesel buses. But, Daimler Chrysler estimates that the buses will use 1.2 million fewer gallons of diesel over a 12-year period. That's a savings of about 13,000 barrels of oil. Oil was going for $72 a barrel today.
