Living Trees for the Holidays and Beyond
December 2, 2008 by greenie
SF Friends of the Urban Forest is taking orders until December 8 for living potted trees. You pay $90 and pick up the tree at City Hall Plaza or the FUF offices. Then after the holidays, they will pick the tree up from your house and plant it in it's permanent home somewhere on the streets of San Francisco.
This program is not for everyone. These are not cute little tabletop mini spruce trees. These trees are 6 to 8 feet tall. The varietes are specifically chosen to thrive in San Francisco, and they tend to be leafy and gangly rather than bushy. You are going to be limited in how much decoration you hang from the delicate branches. But if you have the space (and access to a vehicle to transport the tree) you will be giving a gift that keeps on giving fresh air, shade, and beauty for many many years.

Quick Facts from FUF:
- Living Christmas trees need to be planted after the holiday season is over, but most city dwellers don't have enough space to accommodate these trees when they're fully-grown. Our non-traditional Green Christmas Trees are great trees for our city.
- Urban trees reduce water pollution by capturing street runoff from storms.
- Trees save on energy costs by acting as shade from the sun and as a shield from the wind.
- Street trees help clean the air and can reduce incidences of childhood asthma.
- San Francisco streets have about 106,000 trees but can accommodate up to 120,000 more.
