New Biodiesel Plant Planned for Bayview

Darling IDoc Smith has a good writeup of the announcement of a new biodiesel plant at Pier 92.  The plant operator, Darling International of Irving Texas, has a checkered history in San Francisco, but now seems to have cleaned up its image enough to get the SF Department of Environment stamp of approval.

Darling has operated a rendering plant on Pier 92 for 38 years and is the largest exporter from the port of San Francisco according to David Baker at the Chronicle.

The Darling plant is the second biodiesel plant announced for San Francisco.  The SFPUC received a $1 million grant from the California Energy Commission in May to build a small pilot plant to convert restaurant waste to fuel.
